Across the board, Sudbury and area high-school cross-country
runners have enjoyed very few NOSSA Championships that
could rival the overall success that was seen last week
in North Bay.
Beyond the fact that SDSSAA will send
an astounding 66-athlete contingent to Uxbridge for the
OFSAA races next weekend, consider that if one looks at
the top five finishers in each of the six age/sex brackets,
the locals secured no less than 21 of the 30 slots that
were open, capturing every single individual gold medal
from junior down.
The youngsters clearly led the charge
as Tyla McLeod (Bishop Carter - NG), Caleb Mead (St Benedict
- NB), Lucia Salmaso (Marymount - JG) and Shiloh Sauve
(Lo-Ellen - JB) all managed to cross the tape before all
other challengers in their respective categories.
From a team perspective, the Lo-Ellen
Park Knights juggernaut was out in full force, bringing
home four divisional banners (novice girls, junior girls,
junior boys and senior boys), with the Lockerby Vikings
nabbing the novice boys title, leaving Manitoulin Secondary
with the senior girls honours behind individual champion
Maren Kasunich.
And while there were no other racers in
his category at NOSSA, Riley Cornthwaite of Lasalle (Para)
has already shown the ability to be more than competitive
on a provincial scale, standing proudly on the OFSAA podium
in the past.
Following are the SDSSAA runners who managed
to crack the top five, along with the rarities that were
individual race winners not from Sudbury:
