Ultra Trail Stokely Creek
34 km … run and done
Lively's Helen Francis places first
female in the 85k event |
This
was my second year running UTSC (Ultra Trail Stokely
Creek) in Sault Ste. Marie, and the third year of
the event.
I highly recommend this event for
anyone who loves trail running. The team at Bear
in Mind Running offer multiple distance including
5k, 17k, 34k, 56k, 85k and the big one of 170k.
The event takes you through stunning scenery in
the Algoma District with most of the event also
providing spectacular views from King Mountain or
Robertson Cliffs out over Lake Superior –
which makes the climbs worth it! The races have
been planned with lots of attention to detail, each
year they adapt them slightly based on learnings
from the prior year, but typically races start so
that most folks are finishing across the course
on Saturday afternoon. The longer events are a great
mix of good old fashioned cross country running,
with some wonderful climbs and some technical sections…be
warned the bigger climbs and the technical sections
tend to come at the back end of the races, or later
half of the loop as you are running the two loops
that make up the 170km! The Aid Stations are well
placed, well staffed and well stocked…but
beware of the siren song at Norms Cabin –
far too warm and hospitable – it makes it
hard to leave and the Aid Station at Robertson Cliffs
is so much fun you won’t want to leave. There
are also a couple of aid stations where there are
some fun surprises in store for you, but I won’t
give too much away – it’s a nice surprise
for those not expecting it – suffice to say
you’ll have to climb before you get the reward!
For myself, my second year back I just wanted to
pace myself a little better and feel more pep in
my legs for the last climbs and technical section
and I’m super happy to say I achieved that
goal and knocked 1hr 20 mins off my prior years
time…for the 85KM run! Each year I’ve
seen more folks from Sudbury out at the event and
its always nice to see our community out there having
fun and loving it! Add it to you bucket list #UTSC
#Bearinmindrunning – you will not regret it.

We climbed The King,
highest point in Ontario, wore the crown, ate ALL
the snacks then sat to take in a King’s Mountain
bevy . Oh and there may have been a jager shot (it’s
medicinal you know )
Thank you Keegs for taking this adventure along
with me and to our tribe with the fabulous vibe.

Run Off the Grid 2022
|
I
can't wait to get my hands on one specific official race
photo so I can share the beautiful moment I experienced
while running the gorgeous (yet rugged) trails at Nature's
Harmony Ecolodge.
In the meantime, I wanted to share a couple of the photos
(link below) we took at Run Off The Grid 2022.
Peace Train is a song very near and dear to my heart,
so it is the perfect accompaniment for photos of a race,
property, and energy that is so special to me.
Thank you very much to Jennifer Demille, Tzach, and the
amazing team of staff and volunteers for putting on another
amazing event.
Thank you to all of the runners who once again fostered
the friendliest, most welcoming race atmosphere of the
year.
And thank you to my strong, unrelenting, determined, and
courageous wife, Lesley for understanding how important
this race is to me, and making it a part of our family
ethos so that her and Zoey can be a part of the experience.
My legs might be destroyed, but my heart is full.

NOTE:
REGISTRATION PRICE INCREASE ON OCT.1
SUNDAY, OCTOBER 9, 2022 AT 9
AM
Turkey Gobbler 2022
Walden Cross Country Fitness Club
Welcome to
this year's Turkey Gobbler Trail Race. This year we will
be offering a 1km, a 3.5km and an 8km in-person event.
While we do still highly encourage social distancing there
are not currently any restrictions in this regard. We
have discovered over the last couple of years that in
addition to safe guarding our health, the wave format
resolved a number of other logistic issues for the event
so we are sticking with a version of it. Start times will
be as follows:
NEW
COURSE MAPS
Wave 1 (8km) 9:00am
Wave 2 (Kids 1km) 10:30am
Wave 3 (3.5km) 11:00am
We will be doing mass starts within each of the waves
unless the Health Unit recommends otherwise between now
and then. We do encourage all participants to be double
vaccinated and double boosted but it is not a requirement
to attend this event.
T-shirts will be limited and sizing/availability will
be based on a first come sign up basis. If you wait too
long then you may not get your size of choice or you could
possibly end up with a previous year's shirt. Please note
that we WILL be putting on a kid's 1km this year. The
kids race entry does not include a t-shirt but the shirts
can be purchased extra on the registration site.
The
online registration on the Running Room site
is OPEN.
Please pay attention to the
Wave descriptions when you sign up as they are designated
by distance this year.
This event is a fundraiser for the Walden Nordic Racer
ski team. 100% of the profits will be going to this youth
racing program.
You can e-mail us at beatonclassic@hotmail.ca
if you have any questions. Volunteers are welcome and
encouraged.

Boston Marathon: no time
cutoff for 2023
For the second year in a row, all registrants
with a verifiable qualifying time will receive an entry
ANNE
FRANCIS SEPTEMBER 21, 2022
Boston Marathon qualifiers: rejoice! The
Boston Marathon has announced that, for the second year
in a row, there will be no time cutoff for qualification
in 2023; all registrants with a qualifying time during
the qualification window will be accepted.
The pandemic effect
In 2022, for the first time since 2013, there was no cutoff,
due to an increased field size and a pandemic-related
scarcity of qualifying races. 2021, by contrast, saw the
biggest cutoff in race history–registrants had to
be at least seven minutes and 47 seconds faster than their
age-group qualifying time to gain admittance to the race,
and almost 10,000 runners were denied entry as a result.
This was after qualifying times were lowered by five minutes
ahead of the 2020 race (which was postponed until September
that year, due to the pandemic), seven years after qualifying
times had last been lowered, in 2013. Such was the apparently
insatiable demand for entries into the storied marathon,
which celebrates its 127th running in 2023.
In 2021, the field size
was reduced from 30,000 to 20,000 runners–the smallest
field size since the early 2000s–which led to the
large cutoff time of 7:47.
In 2022, the race returned
to its usual time slot on Patriot’s Day schedule
(the third Monday in April) and a field size of 30,000.
Registrations are reportedly down more than 14 per cent
this year (representing about 4,000 runners), which is
consistent with registrations at road races across North
America, Runners World reported.
The race’s 37-year
sponsor, John Hancock, announced recently that its sponsorship
would end with the 2023 event
