Raced XTERRA Conquer the Crater for the 5th year, and each one is such an adventure! I’ve never finished without a story to tell. From epic crashes to dropped chains and bloody knees that smashed onto crusher dust. This was my first year without shedding some blood, but Greg (my bike) decided to make things challenging. He burped out most of the air in the back tire shredding that ridge. Thankfully he held on and let me grind through the last 5k of the bike. The run was a sufferfest after that, but I’m used to suffering. Proud of how strong I felt up to Greg burping, and I still managed to hang onto second place. Racing long trail triathlons is equally physical and mental. I’ve learned that success requires learning how to adapt, confidence and determination. So fortunate to have this race in my hometown, thanks to Tracey and John Conquer the Crater for putting so much work into making this an amazing event.

Conquer the Crater 21k trail race: the icing on the cake. Last minute registration, perfect weather, challenging but fun course, and great cheering squad. I couldn’t have asked for better. Sudbury I love you! I will always be grateful that I am still able do what I love (running if you didn’t guess!) and kind of still good at it !!

How to get a handle on your running form

The winged foot is an ancient symbol of running. While we respect that homage to the Greek god Hermes, it doesn’t do justice to how important hands are to runners. If you’re running with fists clenched tighter than a stressed out driver in rush hour, you might benefit from some of these: “10 Running Form Tips From a Run Coach + Drills.” There’s lots of good information there, but tip #6 in particular caught our attention. The author says to lightly cup your hands and avoid crossing the midline of your body – advice that’s mirrored in a video from Athletes' Potential entitled: “What should your hands do when you run?” There, you can find a seated arm-swing drill to help emphasise a forward-and-backward motion that improves efficiency. So, why all this fuss about your upper body? According to “The Basics of Arm Form for Runners,” an efficient arm swing can reduce your energy expenditure by a surprising 3 to 13%. Good arm movement will propel you forward and guide your rhythm. The ideal form involves swinging from the shoulders with elbows bent at about a 90-degree angle. To master the hand position, the article suggests you imagine you’re “cupping a precious butterfly” or loosely holding a potato chip you don’t want to crush. On your next run, consider ditching the death grip to lower tension and promote a smooth, effortless form.
