In survival training, they
teach the Rule of Threes: you can live for three minutes
without air, three hours without winter shelter, three
days without water, and three weeks without food. While
our running workouts are not life-or-death affairs, we
still like the triad approach: “Three Rules to Keep
Your Running Simple.” Author Sarah Lavender Smith
was inspired by food journalist Michael Pollan, who broke
his research down into this simple statement: “Eat
food. Not too much. Mostly plants.” With that in
mind, here’s what she came up with:
Run regularly
Not too fast
Mostly trails
In this case, the word “regularly”
is encouraging us to run consistently and normally. While
high-intensity tempo runs and workouts are a powerful
tool, daily moderate-paced runs are the backbone of your
development which aren’t easily replaced. Sounds
simple enough, but what’s the deal with trail running?
Well, they can help you set a pace using your intuition.
They cause us to react to our environment a lot more thoughtfully,
rather than chasing down rigid split times.
Those tips cover keeping your running
program simple. Be aware, if you desire true performance
gains more is required than simple things.
