Make
it an even dozen members of the Laurentian Voyageurs indoor
track & field team thay have qualified for the OUA
championships next month - so far - after the team competed
this past weekend at the 42nd Annual Windsor Can-Am Classic.
Six new standards were registered
by the blue and gold, with fifth year veteran Keon Wallingford
leading the way. The North Bay native set a new personal
best in the 3,000 metres with a time of 8:34.24 seconds,
finishing fourth with that clocking.
His time also bumped the
graduate of Widdifdield Secondary School all the way to
the #4 position in terms of all-time Laurentian men's
times in the 3,000 metres distance.
The 1,000 was also very kind
to Laurentian representatives as both Kristen Mrozewski
(3:03.75 - 4th yr - Nursing) and Sarah Booth (3:03.86
- 5th yr - Education) managed to hit the time necessary
to compete at the all-Ontario showdown in Windsor on February
21st and 22nd.
Third year criminology student
Shelley Hladin surpassed the OUA standard in the women's
long jump for a second time this season with a best jump
of 5.23 metres, placing her 15th.
Rounding out the qualifiers
were third year nursing student Brandon Radey (1,000m
- 2:36.04 - Lasalle Secondary) and Lockerby Composite
product and L.U. freshman Alissa Diavolitsis (300m - 42.99).
"Despite it being our
first meet after the holidays, we had some very solid
performances this weekend," noted head coach Darren
Jermyn. "We held a training camp on campus over the
break and it provided us with additional time to prepare
for the season."
"We are also developing
our depth across the three relay events, so it was great
to see some success in our long sprints and middle distance
events," Jermyn continued.
The Voyageurs will travel
to Montreal in two weeks to compete at the McGill Team
Challenge.
