THE AGELESS ATHLETE

BY MARTIN PARNELL AND MALC KENT
Chapter 3
Quests for Kids (Part 1 of 2)
“Old age is like a plane flying through a
storm. Once you’re aboard, there’s nothing
you can do.”
- GOLDA MEIR, Prime Minister of Israel
In early February 2009, after returning
from another 30 km around Middle Lake, I checked
my email and found a message from an old friend,
Michael. He and I had worked together at the Con
gold mine in Yellowknife back in the early 1980s
and we had stayed in touch. He wrote to let me know
that Tom – my old boss (and a great guy) at
the Sullivan Mine in Kimberley – was in Calgary,
and passed along his phone number, suggesting that
I drop him a line.
I hadn’t thought about Tom
in a long time and I was keen to get back in touch.
Later that evening, I called Tom and he asked me
over to dinner the next night. The moment I walked
in the door I could tell Tom had a plan. We talked
for a while about our common interest in running
and skiing. Then he sat me down and told me about
Right To Play. I had already heard
a little bit about the organization.

RCAF 100th anniversary
walk/run in Trenton
At
the Army Run last fall which my daughter and I attended,
we saw an exhibit advertising the special events that
would be celebrating the 100th anniversary of the Royal
Canadian Air Force. We saw that the event in Ontario was
going to be held on Trenton (among other places). My uncle
(also my godfather) was a pilot in the second world war
and my aunt was in the air force as well. I remarked to
my daughter that it would be fun to do the event to honour
them as we honour my Dad at the Army Run. She and her
husband surprised my husband, Norm and me at Christmas
with a gift that included registration in the event and
the weekend in the Belleville -Trenton area. The route
for the run/walk is going to include the runway. It is
being held on the 5th of May at 8 Wing/CFB Trenton. My
family has a private Facebook page so I posted the news
of Jenn and Alex’s gift to us and said we were doing
the race to honour Uncle Clarence and Aunt Rita. Several
of my cousins replied back and asked for information as
they wanted to join us so now we have a team Bolger entered
and a great family event planned.
I thought some of you might like to know
about the event as members of your family may have been
in the Air Force as well. For information access the following

Hope to see some of you there .

Overcome
mental barriers to unlock running performance
______________________________________________________
Joe Desena, the founder of Spartan Race,
likes to say that whether you think you can or you think
you can’t – you’re right. While that
may sound like a hardo Crossfit truism, academic research
suggests that Joe is onto something. The Central
Governor Model holds that long before your
body has depleted its energy, the brain will signal you
to slow down if it senses a risk of exhaustion. In reality,
your body might still have enough gas in the tank to maintain
your pace, according to: “The Central Governor:
Does Your Brain Manage Your Running Speed?” If you’ve
ever run a race to the point of apparent exhaustion, only
to see the finish line and summon the energy to finish
in a sprint, the CGM could explain why. Your mind recognizes
there’s no longer a risk of reaching exhaustion
and it allows you to move as fast as you can. Does this
mean anyone can trick their brain into running a 2-hour
marathon? Definitely not, since athletic performance is
governed by a combination of physical, mental, and emotional
factors. The good news, however, is that the CGM suggests
runners can get faster simply by changing their relationship
with pain. For that, you can learn: “How
to Power Through the Pain Cave to Find Success on the
Other Side.” Legendary ultramarathoner
Courtney Dauwalter uses the visualization technique of
the Pain Cave to transcend racing hardships. Being mindful
about the temporary nature of your pain can help you accept
and ignore it, allowing you to maintain a winning pace.
Just be sure to understand the difference between “Good
pain vs. bad pain: how do you know which is which?”
