OCup #5 at Walden.
February 24-25, 2024
Walden Trails | 1 Denis Ave, Naughton, ON
|
Once a year I try
to put myself out there and race an OCup.
Pretty grateful my body is still letting me train
really hard and race competitively with the fastest
young skiers in the province.
Raced on my home Walden trails with my entire team.
Proud to be a part of this amazing team as a coach
and a team member.

Chapter 2
Triathlons and Ultras
“The secret of genius is to
carry the spirit of the child into old age, which
means never losing your enthusiasm.”
—Aldous Huxley, English Writer
Now all I had to do was return to
Cochrane and find us a home. Eventually I found
the perfect place, next to the Bow River, with a
red-rock path near the backyard, perfect for running.
In the meantime, my next task was coming up in August:
the 2005 ITU triathlon in Fredericia, Denmark, a
beautiful old fortress town on the Jutland peninsula.
The qualifier for this race, the Great White North
Triathlon, is a half-Ironman, but Fredericia was
something else: a 3-km swim, 120-km bike and 30-km
run. Almost an Ironman.

A Couple of mental hacks
can make long runs fly by
Some days, long runs provide a peaceful and pleasurable
time to clear your head and relax. Other times, they can
go by slower than a 10-day hitch in county lockup. When
your outing feels more Shawshank than Chariots of Fire,
your head may fill with doubts and questions of why you’re
running in the first place. If it’s one of those
days, you should consider these:
Experts say that if you
want to run long, you’ve got to think small. For
instance, rather than conceptualizing your long run as
a 2+ hour endeavor, think of it as a few 30-minute legs
that are punctuated with a reward like an energy gel.
This framework of “nutrition windows” helps
avoid the feeling of being overwhelmed by a monumental
task.
On a related note, if you
want to perform at your peak physically, you should avoid
mental and emotional exhaustion prior to a big athletic
endeavor: A recent study found that
as little as 30 minutes of mentally demanding work before
a period of exercise can reduce athletic performance.
Ideally, you should stagger your most demanding mental
efforts throughout the day. To give both your mind and
body a break, it could help to plan downtime into your
daily schedule. There’s even some evidence to suggest
that sitting and doing nothing for a few minutes can be
a brain booster, |
