300 Runners ‘Earned Their Bird’
at the biggest Turkey Gobbler to date!

Thanksgiving is a time for families to congregate and eat
way too much. Thank goodness we have the Turkey Gobbler run
to help balance the excesses. For 13 years, the Walden Cross
Country Fitness Club has hosted a trail run on Thanksgiving
Monday. What started as a ‘time trial’ for club
skiers, this event has slowly grown to a much anticipated
run among Sudbury’s fitness community. The Gobbler is
also the culminating event of the Sudbury Fitness Challenge.
2014 has seen a huge spike of interest in Fitness Challengers,
and the hotly contested overall titles, too close to call
before this event, brought a record number of challengers
out to run their way to a winning title.
Neil Phipps and Rob Marcolini took the Gobbler to a new level
this year. The long race was extended to a much more challenging
8k course (thanks to Todd Withers for his dedicated course
design efforts). On-line registration, technical t-shirts
and a massive post-run food spread (including Dilly Bars)
also added to the race atmosphere. The word definitely got
out, and we had met last year’s numbers by early registration
alone. Race morning was a flurry of activity, as we were swamped
by same-day registrants! A huge thank you to our very efficient
registration crew (Karen, Karen, Pam, Sharon, Ben), who took
the crowd in stride, and by start time we had a whopping 300
runners ready to go!
The Gobbler is an event for everyone, from speedsters to
families looking for a healthy way to get out of the house.
A sea of orange Gobbler shirts marked the start lines of all
3 races. A highlight was definitely seeing all 40 members
of the Spergel clan take off in the 1k. The 3k was a mass
of young runners racing to win the under 13 title.
The final race to go was the 8k. Many of Sudbury’s
best masters runners were out to take on this grueling trail
race. Derek Reid blazed through the course in an impressive
30 minutes! Hot on his tails was Kerry Abols, who ran his
way to the Mr. Fit Sudbury title. Amanda Kosmerly and I were
heading into this race only 2 points apart, and a whopping
1000 points ahead of all the men. So cool to see us so close
in points, and how far ahead we both were from the men.
A huge thank you to all the volunteers who dedicated
a large chunk of their Thanksgiving Monday to this event. Seeing
the smiles on the faces of everyone who crossed the finish line
was a direct result of the hard work you all committed to making
the Gobbler a success. We hope you’ll all be back for
the 2015 Gobbler, Neil is already dreaming up great things to
make next year even bigger and better!
‘the Turkey Gobbler is a fundraiser to
support the Walden Nordic Ski Racing Program’
On Oct. 13, the Turkey Gobbler Trail Run —
the sixth and final event in the year-long challenge —
was held on the Naughton Ski Trails at the Walden Cross-Country
“It’s a holiday weekend and everybody
knows they’re going to be overindulging,” said Neil
Phipps, race co-director with Rob Marcolini. “It’s
good to get out and stretch your legs and burn a few calories.”
Now in its 13th year, the Turkey Gobbler is
the most recent of additions to the Fitness Challenge lineup,
which includes the Sofie Manarin Nickel Loppet, Sudbury Rocks
Race, Run or Walk for Diabetes, Canoe Marathon, Ian McCloy Island
Swim and the Beaton Classic and Youth Triathlon.
The event includes distances of three and eight
kilometres, as well as a kids’ one-km race.
“The three-km race is pretty manageable,”
Phipps said. “We’re trying to make the eight-km
a little more challenging so we’ve started running it
up into the hills. It’s a pretty hilly, challenging loop
However, the Turkey Gobbler still holds true
to the general objective of the Sudbury Fitness Challenge —
to be accessible to all levels of participants.
“We’re trying to make it an event
where strong athletes can really challenge themselves but there
are events so that anybody can get involved and hopefully start
building toward bigger things,” Phipps said.
“Like all the Sudbury Fitness Challenge
events, it’s pretty welcoming and open to all.”
At the conclusion of the trail run, medals are
presented to the top finishers; as well, the overall winners
of the entire Sudbury Fitness Challenge are crowned. Participants
are allotted points for each event in which they compete in
the Fitness Challenge.
“We’re starting to see a growing
number of people who are starting to view the Fitness Challenge
as a single entity,” Phipps said. “More people are
targeting more events, so there are much closer races (for points).
That’s exciting to see growth from there. When people

Turkey Gobbler 8km Trial Run
Thursday, October 10
A group of us pre ran the Turkey Trot 8km loop to ensure all
was well before the big event. As a result there were a couple
of minor changes made - one route change and a couple of wooden
bridges placed in wet spots. Overall we believe the trail is
excellent . The course is beautiful with many scenic sections.
There are some hard spots. The hills can be daunting but there
are are no technical spots so even the most casual of participants
can get around without undo hardship. Good going Todd, Neil,
Rob, Sara and all for a great design.
Members visit Diamond Mine

Last week we had the opportunity (along
with 19 other people) to visit one of the few diamond mines
in Canada, and although this wasn’t exactly a running
adventure it was still an amazing experience that should increase
your heart rate (right ladies?!?). Below are a few photos of
what the diamonds look like when they are initially extracted
from the earth, and the open pit mine.

mine. A raw diamond refers to a diamond that has not yet been
cut, and therefore is what it actually looks like when it comes
out of the kimberlite (host rock). Most of the diamonds in this
display are about 1 carat (0.2 g).

The slightly yellow color of the gems in the pictures does not
truly honor the quality of the gems as they are completely colorless
in real life. This is part of the reason why these Canadian
diamonds have a higher market value.
This is a picture
of the open pit operation. The black is kimberlite (the volcanic
rock type that hosts the diamonds), and the orange-brown coloured
rock is limestone. The pit is currently ~200m deep and will
be going down to ~320-340m. To get a sense of scale, look closely
to the left and you can see one of the mine trucks that can
hold a load of 100 tons. Each day the mine process approximately
10,000 tons of rock from which they extract about 2,000 carats
of diamond. That corresponds to only 400 g diamond per day!!
When Ronaldo da Costa broke the finish-line tape at the 1998
Berlin Marathon, he began dancing a samba. He deserved to
party: The marathon world record had been stuck at 2:06:50
since 1988, after creeping down an average of just five seconds
a year since the late ’60s. The wafer-thin Brazilian
had shattered the mark by 45 seconds. And that was just the
beginning: Including da Costa’s run, the record has
been broken nine times, by a total of three minutes, 53 seconds,
leaving us just two minutes, 57 seconds away from the two-hour
marathon. The current world record of 2:02:57, set by Kenyan
Dennis Kimetto this year in Berlin, works out to 4:41.5 per
mile; a sub-two would require less than 4:35 per mile. Will
a human ever run that fast? To answer that question, we assembled
a database of more than 10,000 top marathon performances going
back half a century, using rankings compiled by the Association
of Road Racing Statisticians. We crunched the numbers and
plotted the trends to identify the factors that helped race
times improve so dramatically since da Costa’s 1998
performance. Why? Because it’s those nine factors that
will determine the likelihood of a sub-two-hour race—and
they’ll all have to align to create the perfect race
for the perfect runner. - read

Team Continues to Improve
Queen’s Invitational - Kingston, ON, 10/11/14
The Laurentian women's cross-country team set another school record at the
Queen's Invitational this weekend, running a best-ever average
time of 22:35 over the 6 kilometre course on their way to
a fourth place finish. Six runners ran faster than 23 minutes
and five placed in the top-20.
The Voyageurs score of 80 points was only three points
behind Queen’s and 10 points behind McMaster, squads
that are ranked #6th and 7th in the country.
The Vees were led by senior Michelle Kennedy, who improved
her personal-best time by 46 seconds to place 11th overall.
She was closely followed by Emily Marcolini, who also ran
a personal best, finishing 12th in 22:16. Marissa Lobert
was 18th in 22:46, followed in quick succession by Maddy
Bak in 19st in 22:49 and Katie Wismer in 20th with 22:50.
Displacers were Samantha Edwards in 26th in 22:54 and Emily
Driedger in 41st in 23:37.
Laurentian used excellent team tactics, with their top-five
scoring runners finishing within 35 seconds of each other.
“We were aggressive throughout the race,” said
assistant coach, Darren Jermyn. “Our first kilometer
was a very fast 3:26, and it put Michelle and Emily near
the front of the race, with Maddy close behind and Marissa,
Katie and Sam in the second chase pack. There was a lot
of surging between the runners in those groups, but we stayed
very strong despite the fast start.”
“The OUA's are going to be exciting”, said
head coach, Dick Moss. “A sixth place will earn us
a berth at Nationals, but five of the top-7 teams in the
country are currently from Ontario, including Guelph (1st),
Western (2nd), Toronto (4th), Queen's (6th) and McMaster
(7th). I can see a tight race between Laurentian, Waterloo,
Ottawa and Windsor for that 6th place OUA spot.
The Laurentian cross-country team’s next race is
the OUA Championships on the same Kingston course, on October
