A post-secondary flavour to Ramsey Tour

Eric Leishman does not mind leading by example.

The head coach of the Cambrian College cross-country team and recent graduate of the same program captured the 5km leg of the Sudbury Masters Ramsey Tour on Sunday morning at Laurentian, covering the distance in 16:44, 24 seconds ahead of second-place finisher Ewan Craig.

As usual, the Voyageurs women's cross-country team dominated the top rankings in the female grouping, with local product Emily Marcolini looking quite strong as she begins her second year at L.U., leading the ladies with a time of 18:46.

While both Leishman and Marcolini are familiar names to anyone who has followed the local cross-country circuit for years, the fact is that the Ramsey Tour event has plenty of post-secondary flavour, especially at the five kilometre distance.

For Craig, a Deep River native who is returning as a member of the Laurentian Voyageurs men's nordic ski program, the race dovetails nicely from the cross-training that he has done this summer, with some alterations needed once the snow hits the ground.

"I find that the two sports cross over pretty well," noted the 21 year-old athlete. "I always notice that after skiing season, when I first go to running, it always felt a little bit "off" for a few weeks, and same goes from running to skiing."

In terms of the L.U. cross-country team, fourth year Concurrent Education major Michelle Kennedy was hot on the heels of Marcolini, earning a second place finish in 19:02, quite a good time considering she has not yet cracked the 19-minute barrier.

"I was planning on trying to run with Emily," said the native of London. "She's got huge, long legs, so I just keep my eyes focused on those. My hope was to stay with her and let her lead me through a sub-19. I was close."

One of several returnees with the university program headed up by coaches Dick Moss and Darren Jermyn, Kennedy is especially looking forward to her annual homecoming, competing at the Western Invitational on September 20th.

"My fans are my family, they all stand on different places on the course," said Kennedy. "I can always tell where my mom is, because she's got this really distinctive voice."

After finishing fourth in the half-marathon in 2013, Brent Walker chopped a minute off his time and took top spot on Sunday, comfortably ahead of second place finisher Ryan Marsaw.

Alison Cummings also made a move up, bumping from a silver medal performance in 2013 to gold this time around, winning the ladies half-marathon in 1:42:24.

Canadian 5k Championships – My Foray into the ‘Big Leagues’

Almost a year ago, Neil and I made a deal that I would spend a year focusing on getting faster in the shorter distances. About the same time, he signed us both up for a 5km race in Toronto. This race was planned as my ‘goal race’ for the year. This wasn’t a regular race, though, it was the Canadian National 5K Championships! Entrance involved a qualifying time in a previous 5k. The top 200 middle distance runners across Canada would be competing together! The whole concept made me feel quite overwhelmed, “I don’t belong in this group” I said. Neil assured me that I do, in fact, belong there, that I need to focus on my time goal, and this was a perfect venue for it.

The Championship Race was organised in conjunction with Toronto’s B&O Yorkville Race. This race is known for its amazing race kits and post-race atmosphere, and it absolutely blew me away. I couldn’t believe the post-race venue, a running track lined with tents hosting gourmet food. Everything from organic smoothies to chicken slider buns to Nutella pastries and hand made chocolates! The volunteers were dressed in tuxedo t-shirts and serving these treats on platters as they walked through the running crowd. Definitely not your typical bagel and banana.

My race, however, did not ‘blow me away’. As I warmed up, my anxiety level was through the roof, and I was fighting the inner demons telling me I can’t do it. Definitely a lesson for me in putting things in perspective. As I stood in the start corral, surrounded by Canada’s best, I had Vince’s advice in my head, “don’t be afraid to blow up” . The starting gun went off, and I blasted through the first km in 3:25! I managed to get back on pace for km2, but then the lactic acid started to burn and the course changed from down grade to climbing. I tried to push through the inner ‘negatives’ screaming at me to give up. I checked my Garmin at the 3k mark, and was so deflated. What the heck just happened? My pace was slower than I usually run my halfs at! I channeled the inner anger and pushed forward to regain my pacing for the last 2k. Unfortunately, a 5k has no room for error, and I couldn’t fix the damage I did. I finished the race 12 seconds shy of my goal.


While I didn’t meet my goal, I am not writing the race off as a failure. I’ve taken almost a minute off my 5k time over 4 months. I also achieved a new 1km distance PB by over 20 seconds! I also learned more about the subtleties of racing a 5k. I’m motivated to keep moving forward on this short distance quest. It was also pretty incredible to be part of a race where the categories were ‘elite’ and ‘sub-elite’!
