PRESS RELEASE
2009 Canada Army Run Exceeds All Expectations

OTTAWA, ONTARIO (September 20) – Under sunny skies and perfect running conditions, 11,000
civilians and military personnel from across the country ran, walked or wheeled side by side in the 2009
Canada Army Run, a unique event that has become the fastest growing run in Canada.
Among the many inspirational stories and personal victories throughout the event, two stood out:
• Orillia-based Rick Ball broke a world record for the single-leg amputee half marathon, with a time
of 1:20:44.9 (the previous record was 1:21:46); and
• Master Corporal Jody Mitic, who lost both legs in a landmine accident two-and-a-half years ago
and who has been followed extensively by the media in recent weeks, successfully completed
his first-ever half marathon.
“Today’s event exceeded all of my expectations,” said Commander of the Army Lieutenant General
Andrew B. Leslie. “From seeing the pride of participating soldiers, including some who have suffered
serious injuries, to the tremendous outpouring of community support for the Canadian Forces, this
event was inspiring from start to finish.”
“Canada Army Run was created last year as a way for the military to say ‘thank you’ to Canadians
for their support,” said Run Director Major Chris Horeczy. “It has turned out to also be a very tangible
and personal way for Canadians to say thank you to the men and women who do so much for them
at home and abroad. Today, we saw civilians and military personnel of all ages and abilities come
together in a show of celebration, camaraderie and mutual respect. There’s just no other event like it
in Canada.”
“I want to thank everyone who was part of today’s event – including the participants, the volunteers, and
the thousands who came out to cheer everyone on,” said General Leslie. “Your involvement was truly
appreciated. I would also like to congratulate both Jody Mitic and Rick Ball for their successes and to
thank Rick for choosing Canada Army Run as the venue to break his world record. Both of these
individuals have demonstrated to all the true spirit of “soldiering on”.

Haile Gebrselassie became the winner of the 2009 real Berlin Maraton finishing the run in two hours, six minutes and eight seconds. This is the fourth times in a row that Gebrselassie becomes the winner of the Berlin Marathon. While in the women's race it ended up being a battle between 2 relatively unknown Ethiopians, Atsede Habtamu Besuye and Genet Getaneh, with the elder Besuye by 13 days once again coming up trumps over Getaneh as it was the same result from the Dubai marathon.

NEWS

2009/09/18 - Northern Ontario Speed and Strength Development Zone
September 18, 2009
Athletics Ontario is pleased to announce the opening of the Northern Ontario Speed and Strength Development Zone in Sudbury, Ontario. The Zone was developed by David Case, director and head coach of DSSG Athletics Club, to enhance the opportunities for athletes in many of the remote areas of Northern Ontario, in the development of speed, strength and coaching education, as well as working with Athletics Ontario for talent identification.

David Case has had a long career working with high performance and Olympic Level athletes such as Anthony Wilson, Karen Clarke, Seema Kamal, Robert Esmie and American Sprinter Tom Green. "I am delighted to be utilizing the many resources that are now available in science and technology to bring many of our talented athletes in Northern Ontario to the next level of speed and strength development".

Case will be hosting sessions every three months, which will focus on various tests which will be designed, specifically, for speed and strength development in Track and Field. In conjunction with the Department of Active Living at Laurentian University's new indoor and outdoor facility, the Zone will host a wide variety of opportunities to help our Ontario athletes and coaches. The first session will be organized for November of 2009 and will last from 3-4 days hosting approximately 6-8 athletes at a time, with follow up sessions for coaches and athletes.

“The beneficiaries of such a wonderful facility with quality leadership and coaching will be the athletes who have the opportunity to move toward realizing their potential in sport. David Case is the right person for the job, without doubt”. – Loren Seagrave

“It’s exciting to see the establishment of a new training centre for athletics in Ontario, particularly one which is more accessible to athletes from some of Ontario’s more northern regions. The combination of the opportunity to work with a dedicated, passionate, and successful coach with access to new track facilities should be welcomed by any athlete wanting to progress to the highest levels of achievement”. - Catherine Bond-Mills

Join Team 'Sudbury Rocks for the Cure'

I have registered a team with the help of Stephanie Koett and Maureen Moustgaard to participate in the CIBC Run for the Cure on Sunday October 4, 2009 and I would like to invite all Rocks!!! members to join. This years team name is "Sudbury Rocks For The Cure". Anyone wishing to join our team can go to the www.cibcrunforthecure.com website, choose the Sudbury location and follow the instructions to register. Last year our Rocks!!! team raised a great deal of money for a cause that I'm sure has touched everyone in some way or other. It would be great if we could match or exceed the amount this year.

My new email address is shyawmaclean@gmail.com for anyone wishing to get in contact with me or just send me a quick email so I can add you to my address book.

Hope to see everyone on October 4!!!!!
