Sudbury Rocks!! Member helps out Track North

$5000 Donation!!!
Many thanks to ING Insurance and David Ross from Ross, Beaton, Vendetti Insurance Brokers. Through ING's Run for Something Better program, David ran the marathon at the ING Ottawa Marathon on our behalf and won $5000 in prize money for Track North.

Since we no longer have a Nevada ticket sponsor, this funding will make a huge impact on our club's finances this year - in particular, our ability to assist with travel expenses.

David runs with the Sudbury Rocks, and dropped his marathon from 4:16 to 3:39!!

ING Run for Something Better Program

In 2003, ING created the Run For Something Better to mark the inaugural season of its New York City Marathon sponsorship. With this program New York City children learned about track and field events and developed healthier, lifelong habits of fitness. In May 2004 the program was launched in Canada as part of the ING Ottawa Marathon, helping introduce the less-fortunate children in the national capital to the sport of running.

For 2007 four ING Brokers from different cities across Ontario will represent their community in the ING Ottawa Marathon on May 27th. Through a donation from ING Canada the athletes will compete for prize money for the athletic club in their home city, to be used to introduce less-fortunate children to the sport of running.

TEAM SUDBURY

David Ross, Age 46, Ross, Beaton, Vendetti Insurance Brokers Ltd., Sudbury, Ontario

Marathon PB: 4:16:13

Running highlights:
David ran his first marathon, the ING New York City Marathon in November 2006. He's done four half-marathons, two 10 k and two 5 k run, and "way too many training runs".

A word from David

What motivates you to run?

Maintaining the fitness of heart and mind. The human body is a marvel of science that we all should explore. Just when your mind tells you that you can't go on, you'll be amazed that your legs can actually take you farther down the road. If there's a strength of will, the body will astound you with what you can accomplish.

What running-related achievement are you most proud of?
Running with my wife Karen from Staten Island to Central Park at last year's ING New York City Marathon, crossing the finish-line hand in hand.

Favourite/most memorable running experience
Last year I came home at lunchtime to find two kids breaking in to my neighbour's house. I called 911 on my cell phone, and chased one of them on foot for 20 minutes, until the police finally located me, and the 20 year old thief. Poor kid never imagined he'd have a marathon runner chasing him through the streets of Sudbury, and a guy more than twice his age!!

David is running for the Track North Athletic Club

Track North Athletic Club will use the ING Run for Something Better funding to support five programs to improve the ability of young people to participate in track and field and cross-country running in the Sudbury area.

Positive Leisure Activities for Youth recommendations. Free memberships for referred underprivileged children.

School contact program. Free memberships will be provided to talented young athletes who are referred by teachers and school administrators.

Uniforms/Equipment Program. Cost of uniforms/equipment will be subsidized or provided at no cost athletes who require financial assistance.

Twilight Meet Entry Fees: All entry fees for the Twilight meets (3-4 meets this summer) will be waived for athletes under the age of 18.

Travel Assistance: Cost of travel to competitions will be subsidized. Those in financial need will be considered for a complete sponsorship.

Sudbury Canoe Marathon a Success

by Paula Takats

The Sudbury Canoe Club held the annual Sudbury Fitness Challenge Canoe Marathon early Sunday morning (June 24) amid a backdrop of sailboats and docks busy with sea kayak orientation and dragonboat training. Conditions were calm and the temperatures just right for 4km, 9km and 18km routes. Fourteen canoes were entered in the Men's and Mixed categories for all 3 events (a noticeable absence of women). A good proportion of the participants were made up of youth (less than 18years) the youngest 6 years old. Another canoe entry claimed to have 120 years between the 2 paddlers but it wasn't clear if the reference was made to paddling or just sage living...read more

                Sudbury Cycling Club Race #2

The second Sudbury Cycling Club race of the season will be Saturday June 30, 2007.

The race and registration takes place at the Delki Dozzi Track. Registration opens at 9:45AM, and the racing starts at 10:00 and 10:30

There will be 3 Categories – A, B, and C.

A – Will be for accomplished and most competitive riders. 40KM, with registration at 9:45 race starts at 10:30 - $5 entry

B – Will be for less competitive, but still experienced riders. Also 40KM, and will start 15 seconds after the A group - $5 entry

C – Will be for people new to the sport, or racing. This will be a short 15km race, and the track will be closed to other riders so people are more comfortable. IT IS FREE TO ENTER. This is intended to get people exposed to cycling, and no one should be intimidated to give it a try.

People are required to have OCA insurance, and it will be available for sale at the time of registration. It is $25 and covers people for the entire year. (You can race at all club races with the annual insurance purchase) This means if you bought the insurance for the spring race, it is not necessary for this race.

We are planning to have a pre race clinic for people that are new to racing to go over the rules, tactics, and safety issues. The clinic will be tentatively set for 9:00 AM on Saturday the 30th prior to the race. Please check www.sudburycc.ca for updates regarding the race clinic.

If racing is not your thing, feel free to come out and cheer, or volunteer.

Please contact Guy Zito for a technical guide with all of the details.

Run Club Update

The Running Room Club Update:
Sudbury Store (Cedar Pointe Plaza)

Hi Everyone!

Well, the summer holiday season is in full swing with trips away, family vacations and the Firecracker 5K on July 1st! There's still time to take advantage of early registration prices - and to make sure you get one of those fabulous t-shirts! Remember: there's also a kids 1K so there's something for everyone.

Welcome to the For Women Only and Marathon groups which have started this past week. We look forward to sharing in all the fun you'll have over the clinic - can't wait for those hills!!!

Tip of the week:
Heading into the summer season when so many of us are picking up our mileage, it's important to think about our footwear. "Shoes are a runner's [and walker's] most important piece of equipment. The average runner strikes the ground with a force of 3 1/2 to 5 times their weight, which has to be absorbed by the feet and legs...The right pair of shoes can enhance your performance and prevent injuries." From Running Room's Book on Running by John Stanton

This week's product highlight:
Fuelbelts! We've got them in and just in time for the hot, humid weather we're expecting this week. With the increasing importance of hydration as temperatures rise Fuelbelts are a great way to make sure you're getting the water you need during your summer walks and runs.

The July issue of Runner's World is also available now with a great section on how to give yourself a post-run massage!

If you missed the first day of these clinics, don't worry! We've still got room for you to come out and join us for a great time over the next eighteen weeks.
